Studio Series: Dënalisa Shijaku

Berlin-based artist Dënalisa Shijaku moves between painting, curation, and creative direction, blending different disciplines in her practice. Her studio serves as both workspace and retreat – a space where visuals come to life instinctively and time slows, allowing ideas to unfold. From cycling through the city to long studio hours, we spoke with Denalisa about the rhythms of her creative process, the sources of her inspiration, and the pieces she selected for the first chapter of the POEVE Studio Series. What does your work day look like? A good day begins with a morning cycle to my studio. As soon as I arrive, I open the window, put on music, and take a moment to settle. I either continue working on an existing painting or begin a new one, sometimes both at the same time, moving between them. I rest, browse through my art books, gather inspiration, and then continue. That is the beauty of making art. There is no real beginning and no end.

What does your space give you that nowhere else can? My art. Painting. Music. Books. My studio. It is the place where I can truly be, where time stands still and where I exist in my own little world.

Are there any places in Berlin you return to often for inspiration? I love walking through Tiergarten or along Karl-Marx-Allee. People don’t usually love Friedrichshain, but I do – probably because I live there! Nearby, there are two old antique bookstores where I can easily lose myself for hours in art and rare books. What do you listen to when you’re working? Music is essential to my process. I start with classical, like a musical sunrise, then shift from arabesque sounds to old hard rock, depending on my mood. It’s hard to describe, it’s more of a feeling. Often, the music guides my work and even influences the visual motifs. What drew you to the POEVE shoes you chose for the studio? In my studio, everything, including what I wear, becomes part of the process: paint-splattered overalls paired with Italian snake-print loafers are simply part of the flow. The blue Maude flats immediately reminded me of Marie Antoinette and Alice in Wonderland, with their shimmery satin perfect for summer, while black Elisa heels exude pure sophistication.
